I totally agree. I was a nerd and i was super into gunpla and Bionicle. Both series had amazing lore, cool characters but if theres one thing that set Bionicle apart was their being a master class in creating distinct silhouettes with simple designs. Metru Nui got rid of all of that. Bigger more expensive sets, boring silhouettes and way more parts that feels superfluous.

Honestly this is pretty cool, I haven't had a Lego set in nearly 11 years just the whole lego city becoming everything made me not want to buy anything from them anymore. I haven't wanted to to get a lego set since but for some reason I feel like I have to support this line because it feels like the people at lego are finally tired of the lego city theme. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is on defiantly on hold for a very long time now which means they could bring pirates themeback if they want and with Star Wars film wise being on hold I imagine this is why they are able to bring something even similar to lego space even if it still has the Lego city logo on it.

I own the construction mech & the 35$ USD rover sets they're good a bit worried bout the GPS tho but I modded them to fit into a world I'm literally building but the new orange (I dub it safety orange) feels weird cause from a distance it'll just blend into a Mars color theme sadly

I saw the sets come out and thought I'd pass on them, and not i have bought all the first wave. I think the sets are fun. I wish there was more scenery sets tho. I watched the whole first season and it was rough.

Minifigure Sets were great and the POLAR opposite of what Lego does today. Now, minifigs are collectibles, often exclusive and locked behind huge price tags of rare, giant sets.

As a young adult who grew up in a time past the vast majority of bionicles lifespan, who only really saw the taillend of the theme. The pieces that were ported over to system sets I enjoyed (mostly power miners, sue me) never really seemed out of place. I had no way of referencing these pieces back to specific characters, so my only thoughts seeing them were usually along the lines of: "Wow! A claw with hydraulics? Perfect mining tool!"

1 like the stud of a mini figure. Remember to make it asymmetrical and placed where a finger would be most likely to graze it.

For a subtheme that looms as large in my memory as Ice Planet 2002 I'm actually really surprised that there were so few sets.

I was a huge insectoids fan almost entirely because I loved the "glowy green pieces" that insectoids had so many of. The minifigs were awesome too, especially the helmets which were often trans neon green. Also, kids are a huge reason why diversity in media and toys is especially important. Kids wants at least some toys that they can identify with and looks like them. It made me happy the other day when I saw a lego set with prosthetic legs.

hi slugger i am not sure if you remember but i used to talk to you about western a lot in the comments and i came back for the orient expedition and the summer of slug but i also wanted to talk to you about customs and what you think of them because when i play with my western legos i also mix some brickmania customs with them and i wanted to know if you do anything similair. i would really appreaciate a replay as soon as possible also for the summer of slug i plan to send some western sets to you for a review if you are intrested thank you

It's a shallow story, but it's also emblematic of a lot of what was happening with Lego themes at the time, there was less work being put into developing them or leaving a lot of play options up to the kids, and also the themes that were being put out were a lot more conflict-based than lego had been historically. Every set comes with an enemy to fight. And the company has sorta foregone a lot of its older style of custom themes in general these days.

Slizers (Throwbots in Brazil) were my JAM as a kid. I remember being obsessed with how unique and funky they were. Had a similar love to the Robo Riders series. In fact, I vividly remember being _disappointed_ when I got a series 2 Bionicle a year or two later. They all looked the same, standardized and humanoid, which felt lame to me as a kid; as a result, I never developed as much nostalgia for Bionicle. Years later, this led to me being surprised at just how popular Bionicle became over the years, regarded as one of Lego's most beloved franchises. I still have my four "evil" Slizers at my home, though a few joint pieces have broken. I might Bricklink some replacements someday.

when i was young i got a huge bucket of vintage lego stuff from a neighbor when he moved, and now i realize he had a bunch of ice planet stuff, because of the insane prevalence of blue and orange in there! i should try to find the instructions and re-assemble them!

If you tile something completely and show it to non-Lego people, they go "Whatever, its just plastic junk". If you leave some studs showing they go "Wow, that is amazing. I can't believe this is actually Lego. So cool."
